Like No Place On Earth

Amidst the rugged terrain of New Mexico's high desert,

Where sun and sand conspire to create an endless sea,

Lies a place of wonder, a treasure to be found,

A land of pure, shimmering white, where beauty knows no bounds.

Here in White Sands National Park, the dunes stretch far and wide,

A sight that takes your breath away, a landscape like no other.

The sand, so fine and pure, seems almost ethereal,

As if the wind itself has carved it with its touch.

The dunes rise up in gentle waves, like the ocean's endless tides,

And every grain of sand, each one unique and wondrous,

Reflects the sun's warm glow, casting shadows in its wake,

As the day unfolds, revealing new sights at every turn.

And as the sun begins to set, a magic fills the air,

The sky, a canvas of purples, pinks, and golds,

The dunes take on a rosy hue, as if blushing in delight,

A symphony of color and light, a perfect end to the day.

So if you seek adventure, if you long to explore

one of God’s unique creations,

A land of mystery, a place to call your own,

Come visit White Sands National Park, and let your spirit soar,

For here, in this enchanted place, you'll find a world unknown.

Every day, people from all over the world visit White Sands National Park and leave traces of their adventures. The white dunes of

the Tularosa Basin are just a recent occurrence on the geological timeline. At White Sands, we find many remarkable fossilized

footprints scattered across Lake Otero. While these footprints are ancient, scientists are still uncovering new evidence of past life.

The dunes at White Sands probably began

forming as late as 7,000 to 10,000 years ago,

when Lake Otero started to dry up. The dunes

are shaped by prevailing southwesterly winds,

which pile the sand up and push dunes into various

shapes and sizes.

White Sands National Park is the most visited NPS site in New Mexico, visited by 782,469 people in 2021. Many of

these visits occur during the warmer months from March through August, but sledders and photographers alike can

be seen throughout the dunes year round.
